Here’s how to tell if you’re in a toxic relationship. And if you identify these behaviors, it’s definitely time to make some big changes.
1. Lack of communication. No relationship can prosper without proper communication.
2. All take, no give. If a relationship just keeps on withdrawing without depositing, it will leave you negative.
3. Exhausting. Instead of feeling happy and productive, you feel the other way around, it’s time to pause, take a step back and re-evaluate.
4. Lack of trust. A relationship without trust opens the door to invite a host of other problems.
5. Hostile atmosphere. Constant anger and aggressiveness will never make you feel safe and protected.
6. Inequality. Biased relationship will always think about themselves first and will never run smoothly and efficiently.
7. Constant judgment. In a judgmental relationship, the partner criticized every detail of the other individual not to be of help but to belittle.
8. Unreliable. Excuses are a symptom of unreliability and building trust is a fundamental groundwork of any good relationship
9. Full of ego. If the other individual’s interest is solely a reflection of him or herself, balance relationship is difficult to achieve.
10. Loaded with negative energy. If a relationship is full of negativity, it’s nearly impossible for anything positive to come out of it.
11. Continuous disrespect. Mutual respect is a core of a good partnership.
12. Mutual avoidance. If you see yourself enjoying an alone time all the time, that tells you all you need to know.
13. No support. If you cannot rely on each other, what’s the reason in staying?
14. Ceaseless control issues. If one party is in constant control of everything, you’ll never meet half-way.
15. Never-ending drama. Good relationships improve, it doesn’t destroy.
16. Persistent self-betrayal. If you keep changing your opinions for the other party, you’re in a damaging relationship.
17. Constant challenges. Contest the problem together and not each other.
18. Feelings of unworthiness. An unhealthy relationship will give you an everyday feeling that you deserve to just settle.
19. Vibes of entrapment. Is the other person gives something good in your life or you’re staying because you don’t see any way out?
20. Always undermining. Discouragement equals destruction.
21. Empty pretense. Smiling sometimes masks reality.
22. Packed with uncertainty. When nothing is sure, how can you move?
23. Brimming with envy. Partners are never equal in all aspects, but that should be a source of strength, not of a source of resentment.
24. Shortage of autonomy. You should know how to honor yourself by saying NO at a certain situation.
25. Permeates victim-hood. If the other one is living in the past, no relationship can move onto the future.
26. Diminishes your self-worth. How can you see your value if your partner doesn’t acknowledge it?
27. Laced with dishonesty. Lying demonstrates selfishness and erodes respect.
28. Makes you unhappy. Why stay if someone makes you unhappy and in constant battle with your inner peace?
29. Feels uncomfortable. You don’t want a stressful relationship, but it should be dynamic and provide opportunities to grow at the same time that it feels safe to be in it.
30. Lowers your high standards. Toxic relationships can cause us to just settle for less.
31. Senses stagnant. Growth and learning are vital, and you should never remove those in your life or in your partner’s.
32. Cuts corners. Cutting corners can lead to a definite loss in quality.
33. Filled with criticism. Bombardment of criticism never helped anyone improve; it’s not about making things better but boosting the critic’s ego.
34. Brings out the worst. If you are constantly being at your worst, then how can you be at your best?
35. Cannot do anything right. If you cannot do anything right, maybe the relationship is all wrong.
Relationships are important, and a toxic relationship can cost you dearly in time and energy that you could rather be putting to a better use.
Stay true to yourself and your values, listen to your heart, and be strong if you need to extricate yourself from a toxic relationship.
